Serving House Books (SHB) is a non-profit literary press with a voluntary staff of publishers, editors, and editorial readers. Staff members include several with many years of experience in publishing and magazine editing, as well as significant publication of their own prose and poetry, including prize-winning books.
SHB provides page and cover design and formatting, editing, proofreading, and preparation for sales on Amazon.com and though major distributors. Authors receive all royalties and profits from direct sales. However, to break even SHB asks authors to cover the small costs of obtaining ISBN numbers, UPC barcodes, and other basic needs. Our model continues a tradition in literary publishing that has many major authors as examples.
Our projects are by invitation, and our authors have established records of previous books, many magazine publications, and grants and prizes. In some cases, SHB has chosen a relatively new author whose work we admire. The editors and readers, who often make recommendations for revisions, carefully screen all work. Authors are closely involved in all stages of formatting and publication.
Serving House Books takes pride in the books we publish and satisfaction in the positive reviews they have received.
